» OVERALL: Castiel is an angel first and foremost, and so has been ingrained with God and God alone for his entire existence. Because of him being on Earth only every so often, Castiel can come off as cold and somewhat cruel at times. In his mind, he is a warrior of god, and while he is supposed to protect humans, he has also been ingrained with the idea that there are sacrifices to be made if something important is on the line. As such, he is prone to being logical about situations, despite how cold it may come across, Dean has been attempting to get Cas to see things differently, and there have been times the Winchester’s influence has be noticeable.
The Angel is learning more about human emotions and reactions, and as such, his curiosity is going to get the better of him most times. He will ask about what people are feeling to better understand what might be a 'normal' reaction to an 'abnormal' reaction to any sort of simple or drastic situation. He is also going to be experiencing a bit more emotion once he starts experiencing free will.
Castiel will very rarely lash out unless someone continues to press anything against him, otherwise will usually dismiss things if it means getting his point across in the long run. Close friends are perhaps one of the few people he will develop patience with and so gradually will give them a bit more leeway. Although there have been the odd occasions where Sam has mentioned to Dean that his older brother may have hurt the Angels feelings with thoughtless comments in tight situations, Castiel himself has never complained.
With an air of guilt for being over presumptuous and thinking he could save Sam on his own, Castiel feels he has over reached, yet refuses to deal with it, covering the shame with stubborn determination to focus on the civil war. While trying to deal with the war, Castiel begins to grow distant from those he is close to that are unable to defend themselves against the other angels. He doesn’t want anyone else getting hurt if he can protect them from getting involved, this leads to a few conflicts with those on the planet, when they suspect he is shutting them out, especially Lark who, in Castiel’s opinion, has more than enough to stress about.
Right now his focus needs to be on the war, on gathering others who can fight with him, and Castiel turns his attention to these people, though even they will notice his unwavering focus, keeping others at a distance and appearing to take on a lot of the responsibilities he could otherwise share around. This leads to Castiel appearing gradually more tired in appearance and less patient with people who get snippy at him for ignoring their summons.
» HOMETOWN: Heaven
» FAMILY: All Archangels/Angels
» OVERALL HISTORY: Castiel, the Angel of Thursday. Like so many families across the world, Castiel come into life with a parent who loved and cared for him, brothers and sisters that guided and taught him, and a world full of new things to discover. The eldest brothers were Lucifer, Michael, Raphael and Gabriel, all of whom were known for their great powers and vast knowledge, and like many of the other younger Angels, Castiel looked up to his older siblings with awe and respect, even a little fear. They were soldiers, after all, and to step out of line would be met with harsh discipline, and the powers some of his brethren displayed could be frightful.
With stories of past horrors and future terrors drilled into them, Castiel understood the need for order. Of course, with all the doom and gloom that was warned about, there was just as much joy and hope offered. The eldest brothers had been there before the creation of earth, they would tell stories of the time it came about and the joy and applauds they had given, and then again when the first creatures were placed on the earth below. One of the few times Castiel had graced the planet had been when the he was but a child in Angelic terms, taken to witness the first steps of mankind as a creature of the seas heaved itself up to the shore.
Careful Castiel, a brother had mused as the younger Angel had drawn nearer to see his father’s creation, Don’t step on it, God has big plans for that one.. There, on those shores of their fathers newly created world, Castiel saw his first new beginning, and the importance of what those words meant stayed with him.
Following this event all Angels were being asked to bow down and accept mankind, Gods newest children, the earth bound mortals, now deserved their time to shine. That meant the Angels were to help them, in the sense of aiding them, guiding them, basically – as some Angels declared - to serve them.
Though Lucifer often displayed a lack of pride when explaining the brilliance of what their father had done, none were able to conceive what lay ahead. It was the first time Castiel recalls the Heaven’s having lost its peace, having shattered into two groups, Lucifer refused to bow before humanity, he whispered in the ears of those who would listen and rebelled with those who would follow. Gabriel, Raphael and Michael were not the only ones to accuse their brother of being a child; of growing outraged that their father had new favorites, they were however the only few brave enough to say it to his face.
Some of Castiel’s brothers and sisters had become enthralled by Lucifer’s powers and charisma, others, such as Castiel, remembered only being frightened and disturbed by the rebellious archangel. Finally the forces had been stopped, and Lucifer had been banished from heaven, cast down into the underworld to deal with the unpleasant charge of dealing with the wicked and sinful. Unable to return to Heaven and trapped in the eternal prison with all the wayward souls, it had been like a threat to all the rest who would dare question the will of God. No Angel should feel above the will of God, no Angel should question their place in his order, or the orders they are given.
And for thousands of years Castiel had followed his orders unquestioningly, though others could, at times, sense his doubts. As mankind progressed, Castiel developed a curiosity for them; his interest at times coming across childish to some of his siblings, and so effort was made to keep his interest quiet.
It hadn’t been until the apocalypse drew near, being under a decade away, that chatter started to circulate the garrison Castiel had been positioned in. Preparations were already being made, paths already laid out, things were happening, and soon, the greatest war on Earth would come to pass. What would be the outcome; Heaven on Earth, an eternal paradise? Or will there be unholy fires to be quenched only by the blood of the fallen, a never-ending damnation – the devils playground. So many angels were being given assignments, and Castiel was warned to prepare for his own, to be on standby for when he was needed. In order to descend to earth however, he’d need a human to possess, so in preparation for whatever God intended for the Angel, Castiel went to seek his chosen vessel.
Though opening communications with Jimmy Novak, a man of the bloodline Castiel found most comfortable inhabiting, Castiel had not taken the body initially; called first into action to save Dean Winchester who had been sent to hell and Castiel was in charge of fighting his way to the tortured soul in order to pull him free of hell’s grasp. Unfortunately, Dean had already broken the first of the 66 Seals that would allow Lucifer to walk free. Although attempting to communicate with the human, Castiel found that Dean, despite being a chosen vessel, did not have the ability to understand the Angel’s voice, unlike Jimmy, his own host, who Castiel decided to possess after attempts to talk failed with Dean.
The next time Castiel found the elder Winchester sibling, he happened to be with Bobby in a barn, the entire place had been covered in all forms of traps and defences, though none aimed at an Angel. This allowed Castiel to enter unfazed despite the preparation put into the setting. Not taking the unwelcoming first encounter personally, Castiel had shrugged off the attack, and focused on introducing himself, and later explaining his mission to Dean. The initial encounter had Castiel feeling Dean needed to be reminded that the Angel was not the Winchester’s personal pet, the disrespectful tones Dean had spoken were responded with added threats in turn. However it gradually, Dean’s determination and humanity began to win Castiel over, and soon enough Dean started to see the Angel as a person, one that suffered consequences for the leeway he offered Dean and Sam.
There were times that Castiel had to pass on unpleasant warnings, such as Dean dealing with Sam’s abuse of his demon powers, or the Angel’s plans to wipe out an entire town just to kill one demon. It was Anna Milton’s return that really had been a major turning point in Castiel’s minor rebellion at the time. The mysterious deaths of Angels (later discovered to be by Uriel’s betrayal) and a misshape with a trap binding Alastair’s powers, all led to both Anna and Sam accusing Castiel of being cold and heartless after Alastair almost killed Dean during an interrogation Castiel asked the older sibling to perform.
After this, Castiel went to Anna for help on what he should do; she had insisted this decision was his, and his alone. This led to the Angel investigating what caused the trap to malfunction, revealing Uriel’s betrayal. Castiel had spoken to Dean about this while he was recovering in hospital, and during the conversation ended up admitting Dean had broken the first seal by giving into Alastair’s offer to become the torturer. The pain this revelation caused was obvious, and when Dean begged Castiel to find someone else because he wasn’t strong enough, it had been hard for the Angel to witness. This is when Castiel realized that despite how tough Dean may act, and how wilful he could be, he truly did have such a horrifically daunting task ahead, and Castiel was determined to help alleviate as much of the pain as possible between now and then. The next time they met had been when the Brothers went to interrogate Chuck Shurley, who had been writing a book serious on the life story of the hunters (though he hadn’t realized it was all real). In order to stop the boys from threatening Chuck, Castiel explains he is a prophet of the Lord, and that the books will one day be known as the Winchester’s Gospels. Later when Dean asked Castiel for help to save his brother, the Angel tried not to get involved, though remembered their encounter back at the hospital and swallowed the fear of being punished. Explaining that Castiel was unable to help Dean for reasons beyond just ‘not wanting’, Castiel reveals that the Prophet has an archangel protecting him, one that Castiel would not be able to defeat. However if there was a threat in the same room as the prophet, then the archangel would appear to smite it. It was the first time Castiel made a real effort to bend the rules in revealing this to Dean, a sign that Castiel was trying to be supportive, despite the rules that tied his hands.
The first real attempt of breaking a rule, not just bending it, had resulted in Cas trying to warn Dean about plans the Angels had in store for the brothers. Entering Dean’s dreams to pass on a message to meet him at a certain location, the brothers arrived there later to discover some serious fight had gone down. Amongst the rubble they had discovered Jimmy Novak alive, disorientated and stating Castiel had been yanked back to heaven by his siblings.
Although later returning when Jimmy had been shot by demons that had kidnapped him and his family, despite the brother’s attempts to protect the Novak’s, Castiel had seemed to return as a colder version. It didn’t take a genius to realize he had been severely punished for attempting to warn the Winchester’s about something, though Dean at the time couldn’t get Cas to talk about it. The events following this, his betrayal of Anna, Zachariah taking Dean to safe house, a chamber where Dean’s needs were met, yet he was still a prisoner, led to Dean having a fight with Angel who had ‘changed’. In attempts to get Dean to understand that the human had his destiny, Dean once more tried to get Castiel to understand that they all had choices, destiny was just a bunch of lies to keep them all in line. Once more Castiel found himself being asked by Dean to help him with Sam, to just help them in general, and perhaps showing the first ounce of fear, Castiel attempted to explain that they would all be hunter and all of them killed. The reply had been that it would be worth dying for, however to Dean’s disappointment, Castiel refused, he’d tried before and failed; there was nothing he could do.
As far as Dean was aware, only moments seemed to pass between the discussion and Castiel’s return, however the words Dean spoke weighed heavy on the Angel’s heart, and the things he overheard the Angel’s say only further strengthened his resolve that maybe Dean had been right. Returning to the chamber, rushing and worried of being caught, Castiel made his choice. He would help the Winchester’s, he would suffer for it, he would die, but the boys had suffered so much, and Dean had such faith in his ideals of freewill…
Although explaining to Dean about Lilith being the last seal, and knowing Sam was out there trying to kill her thinking it would save the world, there was only one person that would know where the younger brother was, and that was Chuck. Now things were changing, the story was different, and resigning to his resolve of helping the brothers, Castiel reached out and teleported Dean to Saint Mary’s, where his brother was located, as the archangel threatened to attack. When Lilith was killed, the seal broken and the brothers dragged themselves back to Chucks, they were confronted with the prophet covered in blood and bodily remnants, declaring that Castiel had been killed, had just been exploded before his very eyes.
Later, when the Winchesters are trying to track down Michael's sword in their father's old storage unit, Zachariah and his angels arrive to inform Dean that he is Michael’s sword—in other words, Michael’s vessel. When Dean refused to give his consent for Michael to possess his body, Zachariah started inflicting various kinds of physical pain on him and Sam (breaking Sam's legs and removing his lungs, and giving Dean stage-four stomach cancer), all the while refusing to kill them. Castiel then miraculously appeared and dispatched Zachariah's men, then forced Zachariah to heal the Winchesters and leave. He then used his powers to carve Enochian Sigils on their ribs, keeping them hidden from all demons and angels, including Lucifer.
After rebelling against the angels, Castiel's powers began to deteriorate whilst he searched for God using Dean's amulet. However, despite his vanishing strength, he continued to be invaluable to the brothers saving them on numerous occasions.
A little later the brothers are ambushed and killed by several hunters furious with them for causing the Apocalypse, Castiel warns the brothers that Zachariah is looking for them in Heaven and they should attempt to contact an angel named Joshua, who is rumoured to speak to God. When the brothers return from death, Sam reveals that God wants nothing to do with them, causing Castiel to abandon his belief in God and return Dean's amulet, stating that it's worthless.
Castiel, after somehow being stripped of all his powers, assisted Sam and Dean against the 3rd Horseman, Pestilence, by cutting off his finger and obtaining one of the 4 rings needed to seal Lucifer back into the pit. Later when Michael (in the vessel of Adam Milligan) was about to fight Lucifer (in the vessel of Sam) Dean intervened saying he wished to speak with Sam. This prompted Michael to remove Dean, however, before he could respond Castiel threw a Molotov of holy fire at Michael sending him back to heaven for a brief time. Lucifer turned to Castiel, furious by the fact that Castiel harmed his brother, and caused Castiel's vessel to explode. Shortly after the battle between Sam and Lucifer, Castiel was resurrected by God with his angelic powers restored and upgraded (making him an archangel), allowing him to restore Bobby Singer to life. Castiel said that he needed to return to Heaven to restore order to the anarchy that will follow Michael's departure. Though he feels something pulling him back to Earth, some strange attachment and Cas feels compelled to return.
» RP SAMPLE:Cas was so sick of war. The people he was fighting weren't just people he didn't know or have any form of attachment to. They were his brothers, his sisters. He regretted having to kill them, but they were threatening to take over Heaven. Though that would surely ruin the balance. Ruin everything that God had sought over the thousands of years that had passed. It was exceedingly difficult when Castiel's loyalties were divided these days. Of course, he still felt a massive amount of loyalty towards Dean when he really oughtn't to. Heaven was where his loyalties were supposed to lie, but they were scattered. He was also loyal to Crowley. Not willingly. Cas had something that Crowley wanted and Crowley would gain something huge out of the deal. Crowley wanted monsters, Cas wanted souls. The angel was more than prepared to bargain with the new King of Hell, but his conscience was constantly screaming at him to stop this. This was wrong. This was madness. Part of Cas hated it simply because he knew that Dean would wholeheartedly disapprove of his plan. Castiel was so loyal to God, or at least he had been, but God was no where to found. It's hard to be loyal to someone who's never there. Also, if God were around, he would surely punish Cas for all the stupid decisions he had made. Castiel would be made to suffer, and he wouldn't care. Deep down in his heart, the angel knew that he deserved any punished that befitted him. Death would be waiting for him, Cas would greet Death like an old friend and gladly go wherever it is that angel's go when they die. Never to be brought back again. Never to lay his eyes on the kingdom of Heaven ever again. Never to linger in the same field, watching an autistic man flying a kite, so innocent, so pure, so.... Happy. That was his Heaven, watching someone who had lead a difficult life, but still remained at peace no matter how hopeless things had seemed. To most, death was horrible, but to the man whose Heaven that Castiel frequently "borrowed", death was just another adventure.
It was for that reason Cas wanted to die too. Only to see what things would be like for him on the other side. Except, he was an angel. Things turned out much differently when he had died. He was nothing. He was nowhere. Then suddenly he was just back. His vessel was intact and Cas was standing back on Earth. Some part of him was glad for this, there were people that he didn't want to leave behind. Three hunters. Bobby, Sam and more importantly than those two combined, Dean. They were his friends. Perhaps even his best friends. Whatever they were, they were far more loyal to him than his so called brothers and sisters had been lately. Though things were different between him and Dean than whatever kind of friendship he had with Sam and Bobby. Cas would go to the ends of the Earth for Dean, he couldn't explain why, he just did. He was the one who brought Dean back from the pit. He never knew that, while he was on Earth, he would cultivate any relationships of any kind. Cas had a job to do, but soon he became too emotionally attached. He bled for those brothers, he answered when they called, or at least when it was Dean calling. Cas didn't have anything to say to Sam at all, but would only answer because Dean had told him to. He had even less to say to Sam these days. Castiel was ridden with guilt. When he ressurected Dean, things were simple, he merely took a hold of him and yanked him out. But the cage was not an easy thing to crack. Lucifer was an archangel and, despite his powers, he was trapped in there. Castiel was just a mere angel, and was amazed that he had at least gotten some of Sam out of there. He felt guilt because he knew Dean would have wanted his whole brother back. But instead what Dean got was the empty shell of his brother. The soul that resided within Sam was not there. Sam was not Sam. Sure, on the outside he looked the same, but on the inside he was a whole other person, no better than any demon out there.
Cas had an errant thought. Maybe he could get Anna to help him try and get Sam's soul back. She was looking for a way to get back in the hunters good graces, this could be just the thing. Cas' mission could be Anna's redemption. He would have to ask her, and of course he would have to ask Dean. The idea of doing this without Dean saying that he was okay with it simply did not sit right with Cas. Something else occurred to him. Maybe this could act as his redemption too. Castiel was just as guilty of something as Anna was. Except, he suspected that the only way Dean were to forgive him for essentially acting as Crowley's slave, were he to find out of course, was if he severed all ties with demon. Castiel still felt like Dean would harbour feelings of hatred towards him even if he did break the deal with Crowley. He would most certainly question Cas' motives. This only grew harder and harder when their feelings for each other were gradually coming in to play. Dean felt more for Cas then Castiel did for Dean, but because he could see into Dean's mind, he knew everything that Dean felt for him and Cas wasn't denying that maybe he felt something back. Although, he wasn't accepting it either. Truth is, Cas didn't know what he was feeling. His emotions were limited to anger, sadness and, to a certain degree, happiness. He knew basically nothing about feeling love towards another person.
Even though Castiel was fighting for Heaven, he still kept tabs on Dean and the things that were going on inside his head. At that moment his thoughts seemed to be turned towards the angel once more. The angel felt like Dean was calling out to him, subconciously, maybe Dean was. Cas would always answer Dean. He abandoned the fight and the angel he was sparring with had a brief look of surprise on his face as Cas disappeared before his eyes. That angel sneered and Cas could hear them call him a wimp. He made a note that if that angel was still alive, when Cas went back to Heaven, that angel was the first one that would meet death at his hands.
It was easy for Cas to track down Dean. He read his mind so often that his thoughts were almost in tune with Deans, it saddened him slightly that Dean was not aware of that connection. Though it made finding the hunter as easy as riding a bike. Even though that wasn't actually something that Cas could do. The telltale flutter of wings announced his arrival, as per usual. They were both standing in yet another crappy motel room. Dean was leaning back against a kitchen counter. Had he possessed a beating heart, it would probably have skipped a few beats at this moment. Cas couldn't exactly deny that he was thinking that Dean was attractive. Though it was not proper for an angel to think that way, much less about a human. He tried his damnedest to shake the thought from his mind, but it wouldn't go away. If he knew how to convey a look of lust, surely his facial expression would be giving him away right now. Cas was thankful that he didn't, and that his expression remained completely indifferent as it usually did. "Hello." The angel very nearly stuttered, but his voice thankfully remained steady. Those thoughts that had just gone through his mind had certainly shaken him somewhat. Cas was just glad that Dean was not capable of seeing into his mind.
